Private Transfers from Vigo and Santiago de Compostela to Portugal

Galicia and northern Portugal share a border — but getting from one to the other is not as simple as the map suggests. There is no direct train between Vigo and Porto, and none at all from Santiago de Compostela to Portugal. Coaches cross the border only a few times a day, on fixed schedules that rarely match flight arrivals or your own itinerary. For many travellers — families, couples on a Camino journey, business travellers, anyone with luggage — the smoothest way between the two regions is a private, door-to-door transfer.

Porto-Transfers operates private journeys between Galicia and northern Portugal in both directions: Vigo to Porto, Santiago de Compostela to Porto, the airports of Vigo (VGO) and Santiago (SCQ) to Portugal, and onward to Braga, Guimarães, the Douro Valley and beyond. This guide explains what to expect on each route, how a private transfer compares with the alternatives, and how to get your fixed-price quote.

Why Choose a Private Transfer Instead of Train or Coach?

The cross-border transport options between Galicia and Portugal are limited, and each comes with compromises:

  • No direct train. The direct rail service between Porto and Vigo is not currently operating, and Santiago de Compostela has no rail link to Portugal at all. Any train itinerary means connections and long detours.
  • Coaches run on their schedule, not yours. Cross-border coach routes (Vigo–Porto, Santiago–Porto) operate a handful of departures per day. If your flight lands in the evening or your plan involves stops along the way, the timetable rarely fits.
  • Rental cars add hassle. Cross-border one-way rentals between Spain and Portugal are often restricted or expensive, and you inherit navigation, tolls, parking and fuel.
  • Ride-hailing does not reliably cover the border. Availability for long cross-border journeys is unpredictable, and final prices can surge.

A private transfer removes all of that: your driver collects you at your door, hotel or airport arrivals hall, drives you straight to your destination, and the price is fixed and agreed before you travel. No connections, no waiting rooms, no luggage handling between vehicles.

Vigo to Porto: Private Transfer

Vigo and Porto are only around 150 km apart. By road the journey crosses the Minho river at the border between Valença (Portugal) and Tui (Spain) — one of the most scenic stretches of the trip, with the Atlantic never far away. In normal traffic the drive takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes.

With a private transfer, you are collected anywhere in Vigo — your hotel, the port area, Praza de España or Vigo Airport — and driven straight to your address in Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia or anywhere in northern Portugal. If you are visiting Vigo for its famous Christmas lights and returning to Porto afterwards, the same service works perfectly in that direction too (see our Vigo Christmas Lights guide).

Santiago de Compostela to Porto: Private Transfer

Santiago de Compostela — the endpoint of the Camino de Santiago and one of Europe's most visited pilgrimage cities — is around 230 km from Porto, roughly 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours by road. The route follows the AP-9 motorway past Vigo, crosses into Portugal at Tui and continues on the A3 into Porto.

This route is popular with two very different travellers: pilgrims finishing the Camino who want to continue to Portugal in comfort with their luggage, and international visitors who arrive at Santiago's airport and want to continue their trip in Portugal without backtracking through Spanish train and coach stations. In both cases, a private transfer is the most direct connection — your driver meets you at your hotel near the cathedral or at Santiago Airport arrivals and drops you at your door in Portugal (see the full service on our Santiago → Porto transfer page).

Arriving by Air? Vigo Airport (VGO) and Santiago Airport (SCQ) to Portugal

Both Galician airports are small and pleasant — but their direct international connections to Portugal are essentially non-existent. If your cheapest or most convenient flight lands in Galicia and your holiday starts in Portugal, a private transfer bridges the gap:

  • Vigo Airport (VGO) — about 10 km from Vigo city centre and roughly 140 km from Porto. A doorstep transfer from the arrivals hall to your Porto address takes around 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ, Lavacolla) — about 15 km from Santiago city centre and roughly 245 km from Porto, with a drive of about 2 hours 45 minutes.

On every airport pick-up we monitor your flight: if it is delayed, your driver adjusts and waits — no rebooking, no extra stress. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, helps with luggage, and the vehicle is yours alone.

Destinations in Portugal We Drive You To

Porto is the most common destination — but it is far from the only one. On the same private transfer we take you from Galicia to:

  • Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia — hotels, apartments, the riverside and the port wine lodges.
  • Braga — Portugal's historic religious capital, about 55 km from Porto and a little closer to the Galician border.
  • Guimarães — the birthplace of Portugal and a UNESCO World Heritage town.
  • The Douro Valley — for wine lovers continuing from Santiago's vineyards to Portugal's most famous river valley.
  • Anywhere else in the north — Aveiro, the Minho coast, Gerês and beyond. Enter your destination in the quote form and we confirm the route and price.

And of course we operate the opposite direction as well — Porto to Vigo, Porto to Santiago de Compostela and everything in between, so your return journey is just as simple (see the overview on our Galicia ↔ Porto transfers page).

How to Book Your Galicia to Portugal Transfer

  1. Request your quote. On the booking page, enter your pick-up location (Vigo, Santiago, either airport or any other point), your destination in Portugal, date, time and passengers.
  2. Receive a fixed price. You get an all-inclusive quote for your route — no meter, no surge, no hidden extras. There is no obligation until you confirm.
  3. Confirm and relax. Once confirmed, your driver is scheduled, your flight (if any) is monitored, and you receive your booking details in writing. On the day, your driver arrives early and your journey is door to door.

If your itinerary is more complex — multiple stops, a scenic detour along the Minho, or a same-day round trip — mention it in the notes of your request and we will build the journey around you.
