How to Avoid Taxi Scams at Porto Airport

What every traveler should know before leaving the arrivals hall.

Porto is one of Europe's safest cities. But like every major airport, Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport has its share of opportunistic scams targeting first-time visitors. Being aware of the tactics means you can walk through arrivals with total confidence.

The 'Unofficial Taxi' Approach

Men in suits (sometimes with fake badges) approach you in the arrivals hall offering 'taxi service'. These are not licensed taxi drivers. They can charge €80–€150 for a €25 ride.

Never accept taxi offers inside the terminal. Walk to the official taxi rank outside.

The 'Scenic Route'

Some drivers take unnecessarily long routes, especially with tourists who don't know Porto's roads. The meter keeps running, and the final price is double what it should be.

Use Google Maps to follow the route. Pre-booking a transfer with a fixed price eliminates this completely.

The Broken Meter

A classic: the driver claims the meter is broken and proposes a flat rate — always higher than the real metered fare would be.

If the meter doesn't work, get out and use another taxi. Or better: pre-book.

Fake 'Airport Transfers' Online

Some websites look like legitimate transfer companies but are fronts for overcharging. They take your booking, charge your card, and either don't show up or send an unlicensed driver.

Book only with licensed TVDE operators. Check reviews on TripAdvisor and Google. Look for the TVDE license number.

Luggage Surcharge Surprises

Some taxis charge extra for each piece of luggage — a fee that's legal but should be disclosed. Arriving with 4 bags can add €10–€15 to an already metered fare.

Ask about luggage fees upfront. Private transfers include all luggage in the fixed price.

The Safest Option: Pre-Book Before You Fly

The single most effective way to avoid all airport transport scams is to pre-book a licensed private transfer before you travel. You know exactly who is picking you up, what you'll pay, and where they'll be waiting. There's no negotiation at the airport, no meter to watch, and no surprises.

PORTO-TRANSFERS is a fully licensed TVDE operator in Porto. All drivers are vetted, insured, and professionally trained.
