Porto is one of Europe's most rewarding destinations — dramatic river views, extraordinary food, some of the world's finest wine, and architecture that feels both ancient and alive. But before you experience any of that, you need to get from the airport to your accommodation. Here's everything you need to know.
Porto Airport is located in Maia, approximately 11 km northwest of Porto city center. It's a modern, well-organized airport with two main terminals connected by a single arrivals hall. The airport handles over 13 million passengers per year and is a major hub for low-cost carriers including Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air, as well as TAP Air Portugal.
After landing, you'll pass through passport control (EU citizens use the fast lane) and collect your baggage in the main hall. Customs is typically quick for leisure travelers. From baggage reclaim, you exit into the arrivals area where you'll see:
The metro is fast, cheap, and perfectly fine for solo travelers with light luggage during the day. Buy an Andante card (€0.60 + fare) from the ticket machines. Runs until approximately 1am.
Yellow taxis are metered and regulated. Use the official rank outside and never accept offers from drivers inside the terminal. Journey to Porto center takes 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.
Both apps work in Porto. Pickup is from the designated ride-hailing zone (follow signs). Surge pricing applies at busy periods — you may find it costs similar to a private transfer anyway.
The most comfortable option. Your driver meets you at arrivals, handles your luggage, and takes you directly to your accommodation — door to door, fixed price, no waiting. Flight tracking means delays don't leave you stranded.
Get Euros at an ATM (Multibanco) inside the airport — better rates than exchange counters.
Porto center takes 20–30 minutes from the airport by road. Traffic is heavier on weekday mornings and early evenings.
Your hotel may be in Porto, Gaia, or another nearby city — confirm before booking transport.
The Douro Valley, Braga, and Guimarães are popular day trips. Check if a transfer company can take you further afield.
Porto has two cities in one: Porto itself on the north bank, and Vila Nova de Gaia on the south. Both are spectacular.
If you arrive after 1am, the metro is not running. Your options are taxi, Uber (check surge pricing), or a pre-booked private transfer. If your flight lands after midnight, we strongly recommend pre-booking — it's the safest, simplest, and often cheapest option once Uber surge is factored in.
